The free to use pickleball court is now open, enjoy the new sport while plane spotting!
LONDON, ON – Following the popularity of our ice rink in the winter, London International Airport is thrilled to bring more recreational options to our community. We’re proud to have relaunched our new pickleball court! What’s pickleball? and why is it at the airport?
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America and combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It’s played on a badminton-sized court with a net that is similar to a tennis net but sits lower to the ground. It’s a paddleball sport using a paddle and plastic ball with holes.
“The London community showed a great deal of interest in the airports’ pickleball court, and we are excited to bring it back for another great season of fun” said Scott McFadzean, President and CEO of the London International Airport. “We are thrilled to give back to our community and provide a unique setting for a game of pickleball, while getting the chance to watch our busy runways all summer.”
Pickleball is easy to learn and inclusive of all ages and abilities. We have posted the rules of the game on the courts fence and if you don’t have a racket, head over to our security operations center (inside the terminal before departures, to the right) to borrow equipment, free of charge. The outdoor court is located on the Northeast side of our parking lot. It’s open from 08:00 to 20:00 and is free for the public to use. Parking rates are only $2 per hour at the London International Airport and helps to support more fun and games to come to the airport in future.
The team at YXU enjoys seeing the public use the facilities at the airport and have worked hard to make this a reality. We’re excited to share the next project that is underway…an outdoor beach volleyball court! We’re ready to make our busy summer season extra fun, whether you’re travelling or enjoying the sun here in London.
